Description

Oil on canvas landscape, unframed, 14 1/2" by 21", signed at lower right, titled "Sheep Herds" or similar on reverse, the subject a forest with a vaguely defined figure at right, and equally vaguely defined sheep at center left. The landscape composition is almost semi abstract, and surprisingly modern, reminiscent of Albert Pinkham Ryder. The artist, GEORGE THOMPSON PRITCHARD (1878-1962), was a widely traveled man whose reputation is likely muddied by those wide travels, which led to his tackling a wide range of subject matter. Pritchard was born in New Zealand, and subsequently studied in Canada and Europe. He painted scenes around the Mediterranean, including Egypt, before settling in the United States later in his life. He is said to have spent much time in the southern states, finally arriving in Southern California in 1935, and passing away there in 1962. Pritchard's work varies from fairly tight to broadly loose and tonalist. His signature can be difficult to read, his works therefore often unidentified. He was a prolific artist, with now a long auction history, some achieving more than $5,000. This painting has recently been professionally cleaned, and a small puncture was expertly repaired. A gold or silvery frame would complete the presentation.
